During her weekly teaching to the nuns of DGL Nunnery, Jetsunma used the opportunity to talk about the life of Maprajapati Gautami who was the Buddha’s aunt and step-mother. She was the one who raised the Buddha after Siddharta’s biological mother, Queen Mahamaya died after seven days of having given birth to the Bodhisattva.
Mahaprajapati would later become the first Buddhist nun ordained by the Buddha himself.
Jetsunma’s talk was a preamble to a pilgrimage that she along with 10 nuns from DGL Nunnery made which was organized by Wendy Garling, author of the book The Woman Who Raised the Buddha which we thoroughly recommed reading.
