Getting to DGL

Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery is located in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, near the small village of Padhiakhar. It is twelve kms from the town of Palampur, six kms from Tashi Jong and approximately sixty kms from McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamsala).

Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery is the sister Nunnery to The Drukpa Kagyu Monastery of Khampagar at Tashi Jong. The head of the Monastery, His Eminence 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche, Shedrup Nyima, is the Nunnery’s Spiritual Director. The craft community of Tashi Jong and Khampagar Monastery are well-known by taxi drivers in McLeod Ganj.

From Dharamsala and McLeod Ganj travel time to Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery is approximately two hours by taxi and three hours by local bus. Take the bus for Baijnath from the main bus station in Kotwali Bazaar, Lower Dharamsala and ask to get off at Padhiarkhar. (You may have to change buses when you travel through Palampur).

If you are coming from Delhi by train we recommend that you take the overnight Jammu Mail train from Old Delhi Railway Station to Pathankot train station. There are also other trains from Delhi to Pathankot or nearby Chakki Bank train station. A Taxi from Pathankot (or Chakki Bank) to Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery takes approximately four hours, or six hours by local bus. Take the bus for Baijnath and ask to get off at Padhiarkhar as above.

Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery is situated about half way between Palampur and Baijnath. Travel time from each of these Kangra Valley towns to Padhiarkhar is approximately twenty minutes by taxi and thirty five minutes by bus.

DGL Nunnery is approximately thirty five minutes by taxi from both Palpung Monastery at Sherab Ling and the Tibetan town of Bir. It is possible to take a bus from Bir which takes around the same time.

Finding Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery from Padhiarkhar:
Coming from Dharamsala or Palampur, there is a turn off the main road on the right hand side leading to a small white bridge and a few shops. Coming from Tashi Jong, Sherab Ling or the Tibetan town of Bir, the turn is on the left hand side. Cross the small white bridge and continue straight along a rural road for 1½ kms (a ten minute walk). You will arrive at a stone wall which surrounds the buildings of the Dongyu Gatsal Ling Nunnery.
