Shortly after the Geshe-ma ceremony, DGL’s teaching faculty celebrated another graduation. Venerable Sonam Wangyal has been teaching Buddhist Philosophy to the DGL nuns since October 2015. He is a monk from Tashi Jong who had already reached the level of Lopon (similar to an M.A.), but on January 8th 2016 he graduated to Khenpo.

This degree is somewhat equivalent to a PhD, awarded to monastic students who demonstrate deep understanding of 5  Tibetan Buddhist subjects; Prajñāpāramitā, Madhyamaka, Pramāṇa, Abhidharma, and Vinaya.

Jetsunma’s teacher, Gyalwa DhoKhampa the 9th Khamtrul Rinpoche, conferred the Khenpo degree to 5 lopon at Khamgar Druk Dharmakara college at Tashi Jong.

Jetsunma and the DGL Nuns attended the ceremony, presenting the new Khenpo with katag to express their happiness and pride in his achievements.

More photos of the ceremony can be seen on Khamtrul Rinpoche’s facebook page, here.
